Case Study

Towanda's French Asylum Church was built in 1876 and is intricately trimmed with decorative painting. The historic bell within the tower subsequently fell through the balcony below, resting on the sanctuary floor. Following the fire, D.T. Mistick was called to rebuild the interior while preserving the church's original millwork, decorative painting, chandeliers, and religious murals.

CASE STUDY: Reconstruction & Repair

French Asylum United Methodist Church

Towanda's French Asylum Church was built in 1876 and is intricately trimmed with decorative painting. The ceiling and walls were adorned with various repetitive patterns, prayers, and other decorative religious elements. In July of 2010, lightning struck the church's bell tower, resulting in a fire.

The historic bell within the tower subsequently fell through the balcony below, resting on the sanctuary floor. Following the fire, D.T. Mistick was called to rebuild the interior while preserving the church's original millwork, decorative painting, chandeliers, and religious murals. Also included in the restoration of the interior was all code upgrades including ADA accommodations.

D.T. Mistick restored and retrofitted kerosene chandeliers and rebuilt the bell tower. D.T. Mistick's Chief Conservator assisted with recommendations and selection of paint colors and schemes prior to performing the recreation of the decorative painting. The team worked with the congregation and committee members to ensure the church's rich history continues to tell its story for generations to come through the proper restoration of the church's interior splendor.
