CASE STUDY: Paintings & Murals

Mount Saint Macrina

Mount Saint Macrina Manor, a historic homestead from the late 19th century millionaire coal industry baron Josiah Van Kirk Thompson, is now the home for the Byzantine Catholic Order of Sisters of St Basil. In 1999, this incredible home was named to the National Register of Historic Places by the Department of the Interior for its rich history and preserving restoration by the sisters.

The Sisters have entrusted Church Restoration Group to work on several their preservation and restoration projects with a mindful eye towards the restoring the home and its vigor with classic details. The most recent undertaking began in the summer of 2007. The sisters began noticing water infiltration in the library, subsequently damaging the wall plaster and hand painted canvas wall coverings that dated back to the original owner. Church Restoration Group was brought in to assess the damage and make recommendations for restoration and repair.

Church Restoration Group diagnosed and repaired the water problem source and mitigated any further damage. Upon evaluating the damage to the canvas wall covering, it was agreed upon that it needed to be removed. The CRG team preserved some of the canvas and framed it for the sisters to keep. The team then repaired the water damaged plaster and Church Restoration Group's artists duplicated the original design and crests and directly painted them on the repaired walls. The murals were also given an aging wash to match the previous wall coverings.
